Woke Writer Tries to Cancel Native American Child for Wearing Face Paint and Headdress
/Deadspin writer Carron J. Phillips demanded on Monday in an article that the NFL speak out against a young Kansas City Chiefs fan who wore “Blackface” and a Native headdress. “It takes a lot to disrespect two groups of people at once. But on Sunday afternoon in Las Vegas, a Kansas City Chiefs fan found a way to hate Black people and the Native Americans at the same time.”
But in an amusing twist of fate, it turns out the fan wasn’t culturally appropriating Native Americans. Holden Armenta is, in fact, Native American. His grandfather, Rual Armenta, is part of the Chumash tribe and is a member of the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.
In his article, Phillips showcased half of young Armenta’s face painted black. “This is what happens when you ban books, stand against Critical Race Theory, and try to erase centuries of hate.” If Phillips is associated with any of the history he’s so furious about, he’d know that a sports fan painting their face black is not the same as “Blackface.” Blackface is when non-Black performers used burnt cork or theatrical makeup to play caricatures of Black people. A sports fan painting himself to express enthusiasm for his favorite team is clearly not the same. If we don’t want racism to be belittled, we need to stop diluting it by stretching the definition to fit everything we don’t like.
When X (Twitter) users called out Phillips for ignoring half of Armenta’s face was red, he doubled down. “For the idiots in my mentions who are treating this as some harmless act because the other side of his face was painted red, I could make the argument that it makes it even worse. Ya’ll are the ones who hate Mexicans but wear sombreros on Cinco.”
No one knows why he insisted on bringing Mexicans into his rant, but if it’s “worse” that Armenta painted half his face red because he’s “redfacing,” that’s still untrue, and he’s Native American anyway.
Armenta’s mother took to Facebook to call out Deadspin for their article. “This has nothing to do with the NFL. Also, CBS showed him multiple times and this is the photo people chose to blast to create division. He is Native American – just stop already.”
If racism is your Bogyman, you’ll be paranoid about every bump in the night. But this was beyond a typical social justice warrior decrying another case of fake racism. This man wanted the National Football League to scold a literal child for wearing face paint. Holden Armenta is certainly not canceled, but he’s received the national spotlight, and so has the disgraced sports writer, Carron Phillips.
