Rick Snyder's Endorsement of Biden Makes Him a Disappointing Nerd

In 2016, I talked to many frustrated Republicans who were irate that Governor Rick Snyder didn’t endorse Donald Trump for president. In turn, they thought Republicans in general weren’t doing enough.

I asked them, “Why do you want Governor Snyder to endorse Trump?” I explained that Governor Snyder’s endorsement would give journalists and opportunity to tie the Flint Water Crisis coverage to Trump. If Rick Snyder publicly stated he wasn’t going to vote for Trump, that would have drawn fire from Trump and left many in an awkward predicament. It was best they went on ignoring each other, and that proved to be the case.

When President Trump visited Michigan, Trump let it be known that he hadn’t forgotten. The president laughingly said Governor Snyder could take a picture with him, even though he didn’t endorse him. At home, I shook my head and dismissively laughed at Trump’s petty bone. I’m guessing it cut a little deeper for the former governor.

He wrote an opinion piece in USA Today, stating why he would not support President Trump. I found them as shallow and silly as other Never Trumpers.

I was at the nation’s Capitol when Trump gave his inaugural address. I hoped this first speech as president would be a message to unify a divided nation. Instead, I heard a speech directed at how he would help the people who supported him.

Well, he must have been listening to a different speech, because the only group President Trump didn’t support were political elitists who profit off of everyday Americans while the rest of the nation suffers. Here’s a snippet of Trump’s speech. Does it sound like it was divisive?

It is time to remember that old wisdom our soldiers will never forget: that whether we are black or brown or white, we all bleed the same red blood of patriots, we all enjoy the same glorious freedoms, and we all salute the same great American Flag.

And whether a child is born in the urban sprawl of Detroit or the windswept plains of Nebraska, they look up at the same night sky, they fill their heart with the same dreams, and they are infused with the breath of life by the same almighty Creator.

So to all Americans, in every city near and far, small and large, from mountain to mountain, and from ocean to ocean, hear these words: You will never be ignored again.

Your voice, your hopes, and your dreams, will define our American destiny. And your courage and goodness and love will forever guide us along the way.

Together, We Will Make America Strong Again.

We Will Make America Wealthy Again.

We Will Make America Proud Again.

We Will Make America Safe Again.

And, Yes, Together, We Will Make America Great Again.
— President Donald J. Trump

But beyond Trump’s speech, you can clearly see that Trump went above and beyond for people who didn’t vote for him. Trump didn’t even get double digits when it came to the black vote, but he still went out of his way to focus on issues important to the black community.

Rick Snyder also will not support Trump because he’s a “bully.” I agree that Trump punches hard and will even punch down on targets who come after him. But I question why Trump is so toxic to some of these Republicans and why Joe Biden is an acceptable replacement? Does “you ain’t black?” not register on Snyder’s radar? Does “unlike the African American community, the Latino community is diverse” not register on Snyder’s radar? Is he even paying attention?

How can anyone believe Biden will unify the country after his running mate promoted a nonprofit that bails violent “protesters” out of jail, who have been charged with murder and rape? Biden’s staffers also donated to the fund. What about Biden’s statements regarding officers involved in recent shootings? He assigned blame to police officers and then noted there should be an investigation. Does this heal the nation?

Biden’s reason for running is based on the debunked “Fine People Hoax,” which is one of the most divisive and disgusting charades in modern political history.

While Snyder did admit that the economy did well under Trump, he attributed it more to luck. He lightly praised his regulation cuts, but called his tax plan a failure and called it too complicated.

But do you know what Snyder didn’t do? He didn’t talk about how Biden would be better for the economy. And none of these Never Trumpers ever do. Biden stated at a debate that he’d be willing to risk hundreds of thousands of blue-collar jobs for the sake of pushing a green agenda.

I’ve met the governor on a few occasions, and he seems like a nice enough guy. Unfortunately, for a nerd, his reasoning for supporting Biden is rooted in emotion and not rationality. He’s human. It happens to the best of us.

It seems particularly odd to me because Snyder’s campaign was always a pure focus on jobs and the economy. He dodged social issues like they were bullets.

He also acknowledged that Trump made some good deals in the interest of national security, but he complained that: “our nation is no longer respected as a leader on world affairs.”

Now, considering the recent developments with Arab nations and Israel, doesn’t this seem like a petty thing to complain about? Who cares what Black-Face Justin Trudeau and Emmanuel Macron thinks of us?

Snyder lifted Michigan out of the lost decade of Governor Granholm. I’ll give him that, but he’s wrong on Biden. And since I do consider myself to be a nerd, I’m disappointed in his poor reasoning skills.
